Midwifery continuity of care throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period has been shown to provide a range of benefits to women and babies without any adverse outcomes. The strong body of evidence on midwifery continuity of care comes from a large number of high quality randomised controlled trials and has also been summarised in a Cochrane review of 15 trials involving 17,674 women. The review showed that women who received continuity of midwifery care are:

16% less likely to lose their baby

19% less likely to lose their baby before 24 weeks

24% less likely to experience pre-term birth

15% less likely to have regional analgesia

10% less likely to have instrumental birth

16% less likely to have an episiotomy

5% more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth

One of the key principles of midwifery-led care is the right of pregnant women to be provided with good information and to be involved in decisions about their own care and that of their babies (Rogers 2002).
